Synopsis

Mohana, the visionary president of Tamil Nadu's first women-led auto drivers' union, grapples with the immense responsibility of building a dream she is only beginning to understand.

By her side is Leela Rani - fellow driver, confidante, and steadfast friend - whose fiery personality often clashes with Mohana's quiet determination as they navigate the relentless discrimination of a male-dominated profession. Despite their differences, their bond remains an unshakeable force.

Together, they carry the torch for an army of women who dream of equal opportunities, laying the groundwork for a movement far grander than themselves. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Chennai's bustling streets, Auto Queens is a powerful testament to the quiet mobility revolution sparked by friendship, grit, and profound sisterhood.

MOHANA

Mohana has the uncanny ability to turn the longest, most winding thought into a crisp sentence in under a minute.

President, Veera Pengal Munnetra Sangam – Tamil Nadu's first women-led auto drivers' union. In 2025, she was recognized by WRI India for her leadership in transforming Chennai's streets.

Leela Rani

Leela Rani gives the best hugs if you're in her good books and the deadliest stares if you get her upset.

Among the first women in Chennai to train as an auto driver, and one of the senior-most members of Veera Pengal Munnetra Sangam.

A note from the

"Autorickshaws - or "autos," as they're called in India - are a familiar sight across South Asia. In Chennai, their bright yellow and black three-wheelers test the haggling skills of every passenger. But women driving them? Still a rarity. A spectacle to be stared at, admired, or ridiculed.
The 370 women of the Veerapengal Munnetra Sangam union, however, defy that stereotype every day. I met them through Vijay, who was working with Storiculture's Auto Queens campaign, and was struck by their pride and determination to be seen as equals on the road.
